March 07, 2018 - Only Ice
Another year gone by and it may appear as if the only focus of interest, worth returning to from hibernation, would be subject matter evolving around cooler weather. Specifically, if the subject is yet again 'Ice'.
However, ice is always a subject worth returning to, especially seeing how a rather temperate winter in Central Europe has caused most alpine lakes to remain liquid. Now just as the winter season comes close to ending, a sudden and unexpected drop to extreme temperatures gave us a brief glimpse beneath the only ice of the season past.
The 'Neufelder See' lies at 223m above sea level. The lower altitude compared to other Austria lakes, makes the formation of Ice less common. With its rarity, comes its appeal... A dangerous combination. Much like us divers, ice skaters couldn't resist the charms of the frozen waters and as one can see in the video, the ice was just a couple of centimetres thick! Such ice should not be considered safe, as thickness can vary from one spot to another. It didn't require a lot of effort to break the ice and gain entry.
